Watch Out For Identity Thieves Going After Your Tax Forms

The time for filing taxes is here, and getting your tax refund may prompt you to file sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, you might not be the only one trying to file your taxes right now. Yes, you read that correctly, as there are identity thieves out there who know how to file your taxes for you and pocket your returns. They don’t need too much information either. All they really need is your social security number, then the rest is easy enough to find. So, how do you know if someone is trying to steal your tax returns?

If you’ve ever been targeted by a “tax identity thief”, then you would’ve likely received a letter from the IRS telling you that more than one set of tax forms has been filed in your name. Alternatively, you may have received a letter from the IRS explaining that you’ve included an employer you’ve never actually worked for on your tax forms. If these things have never happened to you, then it’s still worth it to keep one eye open going forward.

If you have received a letter from the IRS containing something similar to the above, or suspect another form of foul play, it’s important to take action. If you’ve been targeted, make sure to contact the IRS directly. Also be sure to put a fraud alert on your credit report so it’s more difficult for criminals to take a loan or make a transaction under your name. Furthermore, filing early gives criminals less time to try to steal from you, so it’s just another reason to get it over with. For added security, only use reputable third parties to help you fill out your tax forms, and only mail your forms from a post office.
