Nissan Takes Legal Action Against Ghosn for $91 Million

Nissan Motor Co. from Japan has filed a lawsuit against its former chairman, Carlos Ghosn, seeking damages of up to $91 million. Nissan stated that the lawsuit aims to recover a significant portion of the financial losses caused by Ghosn’s alleged misconduct and fraudulent activities over the years. The company accuses Ghosn of misusing company funds for various personal expenses such as overseas properties, private jet usage, payments to family members, and his personal lawyer in Lebanon.

On the other hand, Ghosn has counter-sued Nissan regarding his dismissal from the company’s Dutch unit and a joint venture with Mitsubishi BV. He is seeking €15 million (about $16.4 million) in damages in his lawsuit.

Ghosn was arrested in November 2018 on suspicion of financial misconduct during his tenure as Nissan’s chairman. After being imprisoned and awaiting trial, he escaped from Japan in December 2019 with the help of a former Green Beret soldier and a security team. Ghosn, currently residing in Lebanon, insists that his prosecution was orchestrated by Nissan’s executives and Japanese prosecutors to falsely detain him.
