Gas Prices Are Increasing in Certain States
Gas prices in the United States have been on a downward trend in recent weeks. Various factors can lead to fluctuations in gas prices across different regions, and currently, gas prices are decreasing. However, several states are expected to see a rise in prices at gas stations due to newly implemented taxes. According to AAA, the average national gas price stood at $2.70 per gallon on Friday, down from the previous month’s $2.82 per gallon.
California is set to witness an increase in gas taxes by 5.6 cents per gallon, taking the rate from 41.7 cents per gallon to 47.3 cents per gallon. The average gas price in California was $3.74 per gallon as of the last Friday. The rise in California’s gas tax was put into effect in 2017, and a repeal attempt in 2018 was unsuccessful.
Illinois has recently doubled its fuel tax, elevating it from 19 cents per gallon to 38 cents per gallon. Consequently, the gas price in Illinois stood at $2.89 per gallon as of the last Friday.
South Carolina has experienced a more modest tax increase, with the average gas price now at $2.35 per gallon following a two-cent-per-gallon tax hike.
Ohio is also scheduled for a price increase at gas pumps, with a rise of 10.5 cents set to take effect on Monday. The price hike in Ohio was approved in April, and the average gas price will be $2.67 per gallon.
Lastly, Tennessee has raised its gas tax by one cent per gallon, with the gas price in Tennessee being $2.40 per gallon as of the last Friday.
