Fiat Chrysler & Renault Discussing Massive Merger

Amid the cooling scandal surrounding Carlos Ghosn, Fiat Chrysler and Renault are currently discussing a huge merger.

The car manufacturers may be combining forces to churn out electrical vehicles in much larger numbers.

The result of this FCA-Renault merger will be a new company that is expected to churn out approximately 8.7 million vehicles per year. This would be faster than General Motors by a large margin, and trails behind only Volkswagen and Toyota.

The merger would create new jobs in a few countries as well, and shares in both car companies have risen on the news. The merger would see shareholders have their shares split into ownership in the new company. Renault has responded thankfully to Fiat Chrysler for this “friendly” offer and will be studying the proposal “with interest.”

It is unclear how this will affect the Renault-Mitsubishi-Nissan alliance, which currently produces more cars than any single company. While this prospective Fiat Chrysler-Renault alliance would certainly save money, it is unclear how the Japanese companies will react long-term. A deal between Chrysler and Renault would save each company approximately $7.5 billion per year through shared research and sharing expenses.

Alliances between car companies aren’t new, and they can be hugely beneficial to companies, countries, and consumers. However, if they are not managed carefully, differences in operational goals and corporate culture can cause painful dramas which end up hurting bottom lines.
