Rules to Follow for Successful Virtual Meetings

Remote meetings can be a bit nerve-wracking, especially when you’re on camera from the comfort of your own space. However, just like in-person meetings, there are certain etiquettes you should follow to leave a positive impression. Let’s dive into the dos and don’ts of virtual meeting etiquette:

Do’s:

  • Keep your surroundings clean and tidy. Make your bed, declutter your space, and remove any inappropriate items from view.
  • Dress professionally from head to toe, even if the camera only shows your upper body. Comb your hair, wash your face, and present yourself as you would in the office.
  • Sit up straight, maintain eye contact with the camera, and speak clearly during the meeting.
  • Mute your microphone when you’re not speaking to avoid background noise from disrupting the call.
  • Avoid typing loudly on your keyboard or indulging in snacks or gum during the meeting. Having a glass of water is acceptable.
  • Stay engaged and attentive throughout the entire meeting, even if it becomes monotonous.

Don’ts:

  • Avoid having distractions in your background, such as unmade beds or cluttered desks.
  • Don’t slack off on your appearance – dress professionally and maintain good hygiene.
  • Avoid slouching or losing energy during the meeting; stay focused and participate actively.
  • Refrain from making loud noises or engaging in unprofessional behavior once the meeting ends.

While it may require extra effort and attention to detail, following these guidelines will help you create a positive and professional impression during virtual meetings. Remember, professionalism and respect for others’ time are key components of successful remote communication.
