People often say it’s impossible to teach old individuals new things. This saying suggests that older individuals may find it challenging to learn new skills due to various reasons. However, unlike dogs, people are much more adaptable and capable of embracing change. It may be easier to learn new things when you are younger, as you are more open to new information and have more free time. Nevertheless, regardless of your age, if you have the motivation, you can definitely acquire new skills whether you’re 40 or 80 years old.
Research indicates that contrary to common belief, the average human brain is still capable of learning and retaining new information even in old age. It’s not physical limitations that hinder older adults from learning new skills; rather, it’s often lack of confidence. Have you ever tried to learn a new technology or a social media platform to connect with your children or explore new trends in your profession to stay competitive in your career? It can be overwhelming, leading many individuals, like my own parents, to think they are too old to learn and give up.
However, age is not the issue; being overwhelmed is. If you prefer a gradual approach, there are numerous learning resources and classes designed specifically for older learners. Just like children, adults have their own unique learning preferences, and once you identify your style, you can explore and master any new skill you desire.
