What to Do When Asked to Work From Home

Due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, many companies are resorting to remote work to prevent the spread of the virus. Even in times of sickness or other challenges, work still needs to be completed. Transitioning to a work-from-home setup can be a positive experience, but when it becomes a long-term arrangement, there are several important considerations to keep in mind.

Get Prepared
As you start working from home, it’s crucial to ensure you have all the necessary resources at your disposal. Make sure to have access to all work-related data, including bookmarks and contacts. If you use a work laptop, taking it home will simplify the process. Additionally, if there are any physical forms required, be certain to have them accessible through means like fax or scanning services.
Create a Workspace
To maintain a clear boundary between work and relaxation, avoid working in spaces typically designated for leisure activities. Finding a spot in your home with a flat surface and internet connection is sufficient. At the end of your workday, put away your work setup and return to your designated relaxation area.

Enhance Communication

Effective communication is fundamental for remote work. While communication in an office setting is often effortless, establishing reliable remote communication channels is essential. Consider utilizing tools like Slack to stay connected with colleagues without inundating each other with messages. Clearly communicate any urgent requests to ensure timely responses.

Flexible Working Hours

For managers overseeing remote teams, accommodating flexible working schedules is crucial. Working hours may vary when employees are working from home due to personal commitments or health reasons. As long as essential tasks are completed on time, strict adherence to traditional working hours is not mandatory. Establish clear availability windows for team members and ensure everyone is equipped for remote meetings with specified start and end times.
