Travelex Faces Cyber Attack Impacting UK Currency Exchange Services
Travelex, a currency exchange company, revealed it fell victim to a cyber attack, causing significant disruptions that lingered until early Monday morning prompting the shutdown of its website.
The Travelex system is utilized by major banks like HSBC and Barclay’s as well as online banks offering financial services to travelers. Additionally, the company handles foreign currency deliveries for pickup and manages the software supporting these operations.
Following a virus attack on New Year’s Eve, Travelex has been tackling the aftermath of the cyber strike, leading to a temporary closure of its website. As a result, all banks and online brokers relying on Travelex were unable to provide currency exchange services. Visitors to the site encountered a message indicating that the online currency purchasing service was temporarily unavailable due to maintenance, with a promise of restoration shortly.
Leaders of major banks issued statements apologizing for the interruption in their currency exchange services, with the delay prompting Travelex to offer manual currency exchange services at its branches as an alternative. Travelex CEO, Tony D’Souza, expressed regret for any inconveniences caused by the incident.
