Don’t Procrastinate!
Filing taxes is often seen as one of the less exciting parts of being a grown-up. Fortunately, the process has become much simpler compared to fifty years ago; now, there are numerous free online tax-filing services available for straightforward returns, and you can also seek assistance from professionals if needed. Despite these convenient options, many people still tend to postpone their filing until the last minute. However, if you are prepared with your W-2 and all relevant documents, there is really no need to delay it. In fact, there are several compelling reasons to get it done promptly.
Filing your taxes early, ideally around this time of year, allows you more time to review your return meticulously. This is not something you want to rush through because errors can lead to an IRS audit, which is a hassle for everyone involved. If you plan to use a tax preparation service, scheduling an appointment in February is preferable as they tend to get booked up closer to the deadline.
Perhaps the most significant advantage of filing early is the additional time it provides. If you anticipate owing money, having extra time ensures that you can arrange your finances before the deadline. Financial situations can be unpredictable, especially under pressure, so having the opportunity to set aside your payments well in advance is invaluable.
With these considerations in mind, it’s time to take action and file your return promptly. I completed mine last weekend. While it wasn’t the most enjoyable task, I now have peace of mind knowing it’s taken care of, and I won’t have to battle the crowds at the post office come April.
