Target Glitch Causes Chaos

Saturday was a rough day for Target, which saw a technical glitch cause a nationwide check-out stoppage.

The glitch resulted in immeasurable confusion for Target customers across the US, but the glitch was fixed on Sunday and it’s now business as usual.

The nationwide check-out glitch came as an unexpected surprise to Target staff and customers alike. Long lines and frustrated customers filled Target locations across the country. Customers and staff were unable to complete purchases as lines grew longer and the situation grew more confusing. Target tweeted on Saturday that they were aware that customers were unable to make purchases, and that their teams were troubleshooting to fix the glitch. Target apologized for the inconvenience, and the glitch was fixed over the weekend.

While the glitch affected the entire country, the issue was resolved or remedied faster in some places than in others. Dallas Morning News reported that Targets in Dallas were operating again as soon as 1:30 PM local time. Target employees in Dallas had to start manually entering bar code numbers into the registers, making business much slower, but still operational. Employees, for their part, had a rough time as well. Many employees were busy manually entering bar codes, while others were busy cleaning up after customers who left their shopping carts and products in the open as they abandoned the store in frustration. Some customers reported on social media that employees were handing out snacks and coupons to help customers as they waited in long lines.

According to Target, the glitch was the result of an issue with the vendor, NCR. Target reported that there was a problem in a data center that affected Target on a nationwide scale.
