A recent extensive study involving over 100,000 participants has uncovered a significant connection between consuming sugary drinks and the risk of developing cancer.
The study, carried out by the British Medical Journal (BMJ), found that the sugars present in various beverages can elevate the chances of developing cancer.
This study offers a fresh perspective indicating that consuming sugar in beverages such as sweetened tea or coffee, as well as 100% fruit juice, could pose health risks. The research involved tracking 100,000 healthy adults, providing a substantial body of evidence to show that regardless of how health-conscious one’s lifestyle is, consuming natural or artificial sugars may increase the risk of cancer. Lead study author Mathilde Touvier told Business Insider, “The findings related to fruit juices may come as a surprise as they carry a perception of being healthy.”
The study outcomes were published on bmj.com and accounted for various factors, including age, family medical history, educational background, physical activity levels, contraceptive use, and more. The results pointed out that a higher intake of sugar played a significant role in determining who was more prone to developing cancer. While it’s not concluded that sugar directly causes cancer, the study shed light on a notable association between consuming sugary drinks and the likelihood of developing cancer. In addition to cancer, increased sugar consumption has also been linked to heart issues, type-2 diabetes, and an elevated overall mortality risk.
