Sending Job Applications Efficiently

It can feel like a game of hide and seek sometimes.

Applying for jobs may have been simpler in the past without the internet. You could walk in, express your interest, and get started right away. At least that’s how my dad described it. Nowadays, sending job applications requires a bit of strategy. To have a shot at your dream job, it’s crucial to navigate the process effectively.

When companies seek new hires, they usually specify how they prefer to receive applications. Some businesses provide a direct email address on their Careers or Jobs webpage for you to submit your materials. In such cases, it’s best to include your resume as an attachment but craft your cover letter in the body of the email. Avoid sending a separate cover letter attachment and instructing them to read it separately. Minimizing the recruiter’s effort to access your information is key.

If you discover a job listing on a platform like Indeed, apply only through that specific website and do so just once. This is crucial because some jobs are posted on various platforms. Spamming them with multiple applications will likely backfire. Resist the urge to send unsolicited emails until you’ve applied through the official channel. If you don’t hear back after a reasonable time, then a gentle follow-up might be appropriate.

Adhering to these application guidelines may seem tedious, but consider it part of the process of building your career. Embracing these practices early on can set you up for success.
