Netflix is on track to achieve a significant milestone by approaching 150 million subscribers.
Netflix is consistently hitting new milestones by attracting a large number of new subscribers. The company concluded the first quarter with 148.9 million subscribers and is close to exceeding the 150 million milestone with the announcement of its second-quarter earnings. Netflix anticipates gaining 5 million new paying subscribers during the second quarter, marking its slowest growth since the first quarter of 2017. Over time, Netflix has gained momentum and expanded its subscriber base globally. Analysts are now projecting that Netflix will reach 200 million subscribers by the end of 2020.
Interestingly, the major source of Netflix’s new subscribers is no longer the United States. When Netflix hit the 100 million paying subscribers mark, half of them were American and the other half were international. It is now estimated that 95 million subscribers, or 60%, will be from outside the US by the time Netflix reports its second-quarter earnings, indicating a continuous shift towards a more global subscriber base. The trend suggests that the growth in domestic subscribers is slowing down, especially with rising competition from domestic rivals like The Walt Disney Co. and other streaming services.
