Moving or relocating is already stressful enough when the pressure of cost isn’t factored in. Between packing, finding ways to ship or deliver your furniture, or refurnishing a new place, it can be a costly adventure. Here are some things to try and some things to avoid when moving.
First off, if you’re relocating due to a job or a position, always ask your employer if they would help you financially with the move. If they really want you at another location, they’re likely to help pay for some expenses. If they say no, at least you asked.
If you’re moving just for a change of pace, always move mid-month. Do a lot of research beforehand, comparing prices of moving trucks and other services you will need to make your transition quick and cost-effective. Prices for these services usually dip in the middle of the month because most people try and move at the beginning or end of the month because of prorated rent costs and convenience.
Always ask retailers for free boxes, rather than purchasing your own cardboard box. I once walked into a Publix, walked up to a produce worker, and he gave me a whole stack for absolutely no cost. Don’t waste money on trivial things like that, and find new and creative ways to pack your things up.
Lastly, if you opt to go with a moving service, don’t get scammed. Make sure to pay with a credit card to dispute any charges if necessary. Make sure a contract is clearly lined out beforehand, and always research the company in looks for any dishonesty possible. The last thing you would want is to lose some of your belongings to an un-established business.
If moving is in your future, half the battle is doing the necessary research in order to get the most for your money.
