Andy Jassy to Succeed Him as CEO
Having founded Amazon in 1995 and steering it to become a global giant, Jeff Bezos has solidified his position as one of the wealthiest individuals globally. His wealth, closely tied to Amazon’s success, has soared to unprecedented levels, with the company currently valued at around $1.7 trillion. Amazon recently reported record-breaking fourth-quarter earnings of $125.6 billion, a substantial increase of 44% from the previous year, largely attributed to the surge in online shopping amid the pandemic. Amidst this remarkable performance, Bezos made an unexpected announcement.
During the earnings call, Bezos revealed his decision to step down from the role of Chief Executive Officer later this year, transitioning to the role of Amazon’s Executive Chair. Stepping into his shoes as the new CEO will be Andy Jassy, the current head of Amazon Web Services, the company’s cloud computing arm and a vital revenue generator.
Reflecting on his journey in a letter to Amazon employees, Bezos shared, “This journey began some 27 years ago when Amazon was just an idea without a name. The most common question then was, ‘What’s the internet?’ Today, with 1.3 million employees and serving millions of customers globally, Amazon is hailed as one of the most successful corporations.”

Expressing the weight of being Amazon’s CEO, Bezos added, “It is a profound responsibility that demands full attention. As Executive Chair, I will continue to be involved in crucial Amazon projects while also dedicating time to focus on the Day 1 Fund, the Bezos Earth Fund, Blue Origin, The Washington Post, and other personal interests. This transition does not signify retirement for me; my passion for the impact these organizations can make drives me.”
Bezos expressed his confidence in Jassy, affirming that he believes Jassy will excel in his new role and lead Amazon effectively.
