In a recent announcement, General Motors, a prominent automotive manufacturer, revealed the establishment of a new business arm delving into renewable energy – GM Energy. This unit will concentrate on offering renewable energy solutions to businesses and individuals, including electric vehicle (EV) chargers, solar panels, and battery packs. The commercial sale of these products is set to commence in 2024.
General Motors aims to double its current revenue by 2030 through this initiative, while enhancing customer experience for those who purchase GM-branded EVs. GM Energy also plans to supply its batteries to local power grids to fortify them against environmental challenges. Notably, a partnership has been established with Pacific Gas and Electric to trial a new power system that can power residences and channel surplus energy back to the grid.
Travis Hester, the vice president of GM’s EV growth operations, mentioned that in case of a sudden power outage, vehicles or stationary storage units can potentially power homes or small businesses.
GM Energy has collaborated with various partners to provide these products and services, positioning itself as a formidable competitor for Tesla in the EV market. Hester emphasized the immediate implementation of this initiative over future projections, highlighting its strong business foundation.
