Embracing non-linear thinking can lead to new opportunities.
Even after completing my college education, I found myself uncertain about my career path, a sentiment that many can relate to. Instead of diving headfirst into a job related to my field of study, I took a year working in a grocery store. While it was not the most glamorous experience, it provided valuable lessons about human nature and self-discovery. Working in retail, despite its challenges, helped me evolve as a person, which later proved beneficial in my job search.
Embarking on a career is not necessarily a linear progression. Conventional wisdom suggests starting at the bottom and steadily climbing up within your area of expertise. However, stepping outside this traditional trajectory can broaden your horizons both personally and professionally. Sometimes, the pragmatic need to sustain oneself financially can lead to taking temporary jobs that may not align with your long-term goals.
One of my friends holds a degree in art and possesses remarkable artistic skills. While honing her craft privately, she currently juggles two unrelated jobs – one at a tennis club’s front desk and another caring for an elderly person. Even though these roles are not art-related, the diverse skills she acquires could prove valuable when she eventually transitions into an art-related career.
The key takeaway is that you should not feel constrained to follow a single career path throughout your life. Experiment with various roles, acquire diverse skills, and cultivate a well-rounded perspective. When you eventually return to your chosen path, you will likely find the journey more enriched and fulfilling.
