Domino’s Offers Credit on Pick-Up Orders Due to Staffing Shortages

Domino’s would appreciate it if you picked up your pizza yourself.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, pizza sales have, somewhat unsurprisingly, exploded. With more people staying home, whether due to quarantine or working from home, pizza businesses that offer delivery have become a hot commodity. However, in spite of the surge in demand for pizza, this situation has not been an absolute good.

Domino’s, for instance, is currently experiencing a shortage of delivery drivers as disgruntled workers quit and go elsewhere as part of the ongoing “Great Resignation.” Even as more pizza orders come in, Domino’s locations don’t have the drivers to keep up, making deliveries longer, which in turn is bad for customer retention.

In an effort to alleviate the impact of the driver shortage, Domino’s is attempting to incentivize customers to come pick up their orders in-store with a $3 “tip.” Starting this week and until May 22, all Domino’s orders that are placed online and picked up in-store will yield a $3 credit to the customer, which can then be applied to future orders. The promotion is strictly for online orders so as not to necessitate in-store workers to continuously pick up the phone.

With the Super Bowl, one of the biggest pizza delivery days of the year, less than two weeks away, Domino’s can only hope this promotion will provide enough leeway to ensure all orders get out on time.
