In 2022, Spirit Airlines, a budget air travel service, decided to seek a merger with a larger company. JetBlue emerged as the winning bidder in the acquisition of Spirit for $3.8 billion.
However, concerns have been raised by antitrust groups and the US Department of Justice regarding the potential impacts of the merger. It is feared that the acquisition could lead to the disappearance of Spirit’s low airfares, which many low-income travelers rely on. Additionally, the loss of a major airline carrier could have negative implications for the industry as a whole. As a result, the Department of Justice is preparing to file a lawsuit to prevent the merger from proceeding.
JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes acknowledged the lawsuit and stated that they anticipated such legal challenges. He emphasized that the merger between JetBlue and Spirit would not result in a monopoly-like situation but rather a small percentage of the overall air travel market. Hayes highlighted that the majority of passengers would still be flying with other airlines, and the merger would bring benefits in terms of expanded services.
