China’s Golden Week Holiday Marks a Peak in Global Travel
Chinese Golden Week heralds one of the world’s largest mass movements of people as many Chinese citizens opt to travel abroad during this peak tourist season. This surge in travelers significantly boosts the tourism sectors of popular destinations like Bangkok and Moscow. Of note, Thailand has experienced a substantial uptick in Chinese tourist arrivals, with an estimated 250,000 visitors from China expected during the Golden Week, marking a 38% increase from the previous year. This surge comes as a positive turn after a tragic boating accident in Phuket claimed the lives of 47 tourists in July 2018, causing a dip in bookings.
Thailand has actively been encouraging more Chinese tourists by waiving visa fees for travelers from China. The impact of Chinese tourism is not limited to Thailand alone; Chinese visitors worldwide contribute significantly to local economies through the purchase of local goods, food, and luxury items. Countries such as Japan, the US, the UK, and Italy are particularly favored by Chinese tourists for their unique offerings.
Despite concerns about China’s economic slowdown, the end of Golden Week is anticipated to be successful overall. While economic factors may deter some potential travelers, destinations like Thailand continue to attract visitors with diverse and cost-effective vacation options. This year, Hong Kong stands out as one of the least favored destinations during Golden Week, experiencing a decline in mainland Chinese tourists due to the ongoing civil unrest in recent months.
