Travelex Hackers Cause Chaos at Partner Banks

Hackers who targeted Travelex’s website are now disrupting operations at major banks worldwide.

Collaborating banks of Travelex have declared that they are out of foreign currency reserves for travel money.

Following a cyber attack on Travelex towards the end of 2019, staff at Travelex were left with no choice but to resort to manual money exchanges using pen and paper. The hackers remain in control of the Travelex website and are demanding a $6 million ransom to restore access to the site. The Royal Bank of Scotland, Lloyds, and Barclays have all halted their travel money services. They informed customers that their supply of foreign banknotes from Travelex has been exhausted. Travelex employees have shared with the BBC that they feel overwhelmed by the situation.

Travelex is collaborating with leading cybersecurity experts to resolve the issue. The company is committed to keeping its partners and customers informed about the ongoing situation. Despite these efforts, reports from anonymous Travelex employees to the BBC highlight disarray within the company offices. Some customers have also experienced delays in refunds for money left in the system. Those with online orders being processed during the attack have faced challenges accessing their funds or obtaining refunds as Travelex employees strive to address the issue.
