With advancements in self-driving technology, companies are looking for more real-world testing opportunities. One such company is now conducting tests on the streets of California.

Zoox, a robotaxi company owned by Amazon, has started public road tests of its autonomous vehicles in California. Amazon employees were offered the chance to ride in these self-driving vehicles between the company’s two headquarters on a predetermined route. Each vehicle can accommodate up to four passengers and can travel at speeds of up to 35 miles per hour.

Zoox CEO Aicha Evans stated, “With the launch of our self-driving employee shuttle, we are contributing to the progress made in this industry over the past year and moving Zoox closer to providing a commercial robotaxi service for the public.”

In case of any safety concerns, a human operator can take control of the vehicle for guidance or to stop it. All such incidents are recorded and shared with Zoox for further testing and research. Evans explained, “If the vehicle encounters a situation where it needs assistance, we have a ‘fusion center’ with trained operators who can provide guidance. The vehicle remains in control, making all driving decisions; the trained operators only offer suggestions or provide an alternative path, or as a last resort, bring the vehicle to a stop.”
