Pizza delivery has been a familiar part of modern life for many years, but not all delivery personnel go up to your front door and ring the bell.
Rob Doyle works as a scuba-diving pizza delivery guy at an underwater hotel in Florida.
Every workday, Rob gears up to dive underwater, carrying a waterproof container with a piping hot pizza inside. “I don’t think there’s anyone else on Earth who delivers pizza like I do,” Rob remarks. And he’s probably correct. When was the last time you encountered or even heard of someone delivering pizza underwater? The process is not as straightforward as delivering a regular pizza, naturally. Rob needs to get close to the delivery spot, seal the pizza in a water-tight case, and then put on his scuba gear. After that, it’s essentially a routine pizza delivery job, except Rob scuba dives with the pizza strapped to him.
Rob is qualified and certified for his work and also serves as a scuba instructor. This specialized service he provides even has a name. Known as the “bell buoy,” this service enables Rob to deliver items to locations only accessible underwater through a scuba dive. The hotel where he is employed is just as extraordinary as his role. Jules’ Underwater Sea Lodge is a 50-foot steel construction with only two bedrooms, and Rob can access these rooms through the airlock beneath it. If you fancy a pizza delivered by Rob, room rates start at a few hundred dollars per night, and the rooms come equipped with all the modern conveniences you’d expect from a hotel.
