Watch Out for Travel Scams This Holiday Season

Travel can be costly, especially if you fall victim to a scam.

Scammers often target travelers seeking affordable deals online. To avoid falling for a scam, it’s advisable to plan your trip well in advance. Planning ahead not only helps you secure better deals but also safeguards you from potential scams. Therefore, take your time when researching accommodations and flights.

One of the most common scams is falling for a “prize” trip offer that creates a sense of urgency. Scammers may claim you’ve won a trip and present alluring offers that seem too good to be true. Remember, if something appears too good to be true, it probably is. These scams often entail hidden fees, send you to questionable destinations, and can leave you in a tricky situation.

When booking hotels, opt for reputable establishments. If you choose a budget-friendly hotel that’s unfamiliar to you, consider paying in cash. Hotel scams often involve the theft of credit card information. Using cash or trusted platforms like Booking.com or Airbnb can help safeguard your financial details, provided you don’t share them with the hosts.

Lastly, be cautious if you receive an offer that claims to be a one-time opportunity that will vanish if you hesitate. In such cases, it’s best to step away. Hang up the phone, delete the email, or block the social media message. These pressure tactics are prevalent when many people are planning holidays, so remain vigilant to protect yourself from potential scams.
