Why You Should Be Honest on Your Resume

Lying on your resume is never a good idea, and the consequences can be severe, as one woman in Australia found out the hard way.

This woman now faces up to a year in prison for using a falsified resume to secure a government job. The lies on her resume were extensive, including fabricating work experience, educational qualifications, and even providing a fake reference whom she impersonated. She also forged a payment slip to negotiate a higher salary of $185,000 per year and went as far as producing a fraudulent doctor’s note.

Despite these elaborate deceptions, the woman managed to land the job of chief information officer for South Australia’s Department of the Premier and Cabinet, although her ruse was eventually uncovered. Her LinkedIn profile picture featuring American supermodel Kate Upton was one of the red flags that led to her exposure. As a result, she was sentenced to 25 months in jail, with 12 months to be served without the possibility of parole, after pleading guilty to charges of document fraud, deception, and public office misconduct.
